A Night to Remember, a Night to Celebrate

An evening concert and art reception brought over 75 people to The Barney Library's Last Hurrah before the library closes for renovation on Thursday, August 11 at 5 p.m. until September 2010. The music performed by Crescendo was EXCELLENT. The art show was well received.

The audience was filled with people who support their community, their families, the Barney Library and the arts. This was a poignant evening because it was filled with old friends, good memories and reluctant good-byes.

We hope to see and serve everyone at the Main Library, as well all look forward to September 2010! See you in September!

An Evening With Crescendo

Sebastian Massa-Alto Sax

Matt Swanson-Piano

Billy D'Eugenio-Drums

Jazz and contemporary numbers will be performed by Farmington's own on Tuesday night, August 11 at 6:30 p.m. at The Barney Library, 71 Main Street, Farmington, when the library hosts its last hurrah before closing for renovation until September 2010. Crescendo was founded in 2007 when the talent of three individuals came together to perform at The Hillstead Museum. The music was a jazzy spin on Christmas classics and the group was considered a hit.

Afterwards, their attention turned to jazz standards and from there, Crescendo played at The Barney Branch in 2008. Crescendo is now back at Barney with their program of smooth, sultry jazz, consisting of a mix of upbeat swings, soulful ballads and steamy latin sambas.

The players in this year's ensemble include Billy D'Eugenio, drums; Matt Swanson, piano; and Sebastian Massa-alto sax. Billy is entering his senior year at Farmington High School and at the Academy of the Arts in Hartford. He specializes in theater lighting design and latin jazz. He is currently studying under the direction of Ed Fast. Billy is also active in acting, starring in shows such as Starmites and How to Succeed in Business. He has also been a stage manager and has worked shows at both the JCC in West Hartford and at Farmington High School.

Matt Swanson is entering his sophomore year at Farmington High School and has been playing piano for over six years. He has been classically trained and currently studies with Paul Wendehack. Matt is also a participant in the F.H.S Jazz Band and their Symphonic Band and on occasion he accompanies the choirs.

Sebby Massa is entering his senior year at Farmington High School and currently serves as the principal bassoonist in the Wind Ensemble, Chamber and Symphony Orchestras. In addition, he has played in the 2009 All State Orchestra and Regional Orchestra. He played as second chair in both. He has also been in numerous choirs of mention. These include the ACDA Honors choir, the 2008 All State choir, the Madrigal singers and Chamber singers. He recently performed the Hostias solo in Faure’s Requiem and has been under the direction of Leslie Imse for the past five years. He is also currently studying piano with Paul Wendehack and has been playing for five years. Sebby’s saxophone report dates back to fifth grade when he first started playing saxophone. He has played in school bands and jazz bands until high school when his bassoon career took off. He still plays in the marching band and on occasion in the band when a sub is needed.

The Crescendo Concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. Prior to that , at 6 p.m. a Meet The Artists Reception will be held in The Hoppin Gallery. Dawn Nolan Lombardi, Jane W. Maciel and Catherine Noujaim will exhibit oil paintings, water colors and ceramic handiwork. An ice cream social will follow the evening's activities. The public is invited.
