Starry Night Artists

The Barney Library Children's Program Room was the setting for a program for budding artists, under the direction of Ms. Jane Maciel, the library's graphic artist and programmer.  The artwork of Kandisky was studied and children had the opportunity to create look-alike works of art.  The second part of the series will be held on August 9, when the work of Paul Klee will be explored.  Who knows?  We may have our own famous artist hanging in The Met one day!

Christmas In July

The Freeze Dance, done with snowballs, set the stage for a Christmas in July Celebration at The Barney Library, where children heard Christmas stories, had a jingle bell parade, decorated a Christmas Tree, played a game with a stuffed Santa, viewed a Christmas film and savored soft peppermints.  Parents were reminded that Christmas Eve was only five months away, should they wish to get a jump on their Christmas shopping.  Merry Christmas in July!

Begin At The Beginning!

It was a parade of babies on Tuesday mornings at The Barney Library, where little ones are hard at work discovering the world.  Joined by their parents, grandparents or caregivers, little tots enjoyed lift the flap books, music, finger plays, nursery rhymes and playtime, once again proving that no one is ever too young for a library.  It's important to begin at the beginning!

July 31 Concert in the Village - Local Jazz Sensation Dana Lauren

On Tuesday, July 31, the Farmington Libraries will host an outdoor concert with local jazz sensation Dana Lauren and her trio of musicians.

Dana Lauren has been compared to Adele and Ella Fitzgerald; a unique combination that leaves a contemporary imprint on a timeless jazz sound and its stylings. At 23, Dana Lauren has already performed at some of the Nation’s most prestigious jazz venues, recorded two albums and has graduated from the Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship. In 2010 Dana Lauren was a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition.

A chance meeting with Arturo Sandoval at the 2006 Newport Jazz Festival provided Dana with opportunities that any young performer could only dream about. In July 2007 Dana recorded her first CD titled “Stairway to the Stars” produced by and featuring Mr. Sandoval. Dana has had the honor of sharing the stage with Mr. Sandoval at the Arturo Sandoval Jazz Club in Miami, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Birdland, The Blue Note and Iridium in NYC and Sculler’s Jazz Club in Boston.

Her most recent CD “It’s You Or No One” brings together a stellar group of musicians including Joel Frahm on tenor sax, Manuel Valera on piano, Will Graefe on guitar, Luques Curtis on bass and Jake Goldbas on drums. The extraordinary Christian McBride joined her for a bass/voice duo of “On the Sunny Side of the Street”. The CD is a collection of standards with fresh arrangements and classic swing.

Both CDs will be available for purchase after the show. For more information, please visit her web site: http://www.danalauren.com/

This live, outdoor concert will take place at 6:30 p.m. on the green at the Barney Library located at 71 Main Street in the Village. In the event of inclement weather, we will move the show inside the library. The summer concert series is sponsored by the Friends of the Farmington Libraries and is free and open to the public.

Advance registration is required for this program. Please call 860-673-6791 for details or register through the library’s web site at http://www.farmingtonlibraries.org. The Farmington Library is part of the Farmington Village Green and Library Association.  If you have special needs to attend library programs, contact the library in advance.

Dream Big!

Dream Big!  Be a teacher, a baseball player, a dancer, an animal doctor, a police officer.  Youngsters attending a recent Barney Library story hour had the opportunity to hear stories of these occupations,  to play a "Who Am I" guessing game, and  a beanbag hat throw, before making their own dream catchers.  The animal doctor tuned out to be the most popular career choice.  Here's to dreams come true!

Proudly Wearing Farmington Libraries T-Shirts!

Farmington students in Grades K-6 can register for summer reading and receive a  t-shirt designed by Farmington Libraries' graphic artist, Jane Maciel.  The purple shirt reads Dream Big READ@farmingtonlibraries.org in lime green, as modeled by the two young ladies in this photo.

After registering, each child makes three library visits and earns a prize each time, consisting of a Rita's coupon, a rubber bracelet and a paperback book.

Check in at the library soon and claim your prize!

Passing Time On A Summer Day at The Library

Quiet, air conditioning, and a selection of great books make the library an ideal destination in the summer, especially for eager readers wanting to strengthen their reading skills before school starts in September.

A-Camping We Will Go!

                                                             S'MORES PLEASE!

The camping experience was recreated for participants in a camping story hour at The Barney Library
today.  From "The Wheels On The Bus" to canoeing, camp songs and dances, camping tales, ghost stories, colorful Fruit Loop Bracelets, and eating S'mores around a campfire, a good time was had by all.  Fortunately, no bears dropped by!
