The Humorous History of Jury Duty

Village Vibrations Coming This Summer!

This summer, The Friends of The Farmington Library are sponsoring four free concerts in front of the portico of The Barney Library, 71 Main Street, Farmington. The series, known as Village Vibrations, is an opportunity to meet up with friends, enjoy great music and have a good time in summer evening's twilight, Everyone is invited to bring a blanket or lawn chair to these Tuesday evening offerings, which will run from 7-8 p.m. In case of rain, the concert moves inside.

Tara's Thistle will open The Village Vibrations series on Tuesday, May 27. Island Rhythm, the ultimate beach party, is scheduled for Tuesday, June 17. Crescendo takes the stage on Tuesday, July 15 with jazz and contemporary numbers. Triple Play concludes the series on August 12 with a musical review of tunes from 1940-2008.

The children from this community Brownie Troop are celebrating nature by planting beautiful flowers on the library lawn. It's so pretty on the green and on Main right now- everything looks so fresh and clean. Barney even has a resident robin starting her family in the cherry tree. First Concert

Summertime is coming quickly and that means more lovely daylight and twilight. Come listen to some great music at the Barney this summer. Meet outside with your friends and neighbors on the Library portico and enjoy Tara's Thistle on Tuesday, May 27 at 7:00 p.m. The first kick-off performance is extra special featuring the performances of Bruce and Sandy Hedman. This husband and wife team combines two part harmony, guitar, harmonica, drums, Scottish bagpipes, the Irish Flute and Bodhran to sing stories about Ireland, Scotland and the sea.

Elephants on Parade

Spring Vacation Week is a Big Success

All the children's programs were well received at the Barney Library this week. Children and their parents and grandparents enjoyed learning about Australia, created crowns of paper flowers, constructed edible caterpillers from marshmellows and fluff, and watched vintage Disney cartoons.

Family fun is found at this local branch, and summer hasn't even begun. Be sure to watch for all the adventures that will be coming your way for this summer's reading.

Finger Licking Good!

There were caterpillars galore at this week's Incredible Edible program!The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, The Caterpillow Fight by Sam McBratney, and The Butterfly Story by Anca Hariton were followed by a showing of the movie The Caterpillar and The Polliwog. Afterwards, it was time to create caterpillars out of marshmallow fluff, marshmallows, colored sprinkles and pipe cleaners. Children found that their caterpillars were finger licking good!

Kids Explore Australia!

April is Australia month at The Barney Library, 71 Main Street and children aged four and up are invited to visit "the land down under" on Thursday, April 17 at 10:30 a.m. A teacher from Sidney, Australia will be a special guest. Cee Jay Robinson will show slides from her country, share a picture book, set up a "touch and feel" table of Australian items including kangaroo fur and discuss how life in The United States is different from life in Australia. Participants will have the opportunity to make Fairy Bread.

Spring Vacation Specials @ Barney

There are four special programs for children and their parents during school vacation week.

Beginning on Monday, April 14, the Barney is hosting a Funny FIlm Show Time, children can bring their lunch and watch an hour of vintage Disney cartoons. 12:00 p.m.- 1:00 p.m. All ages are welcome.

On Tuesday, April 15, an exciting storytime, Incredible Edibles , is planned. Food will be featured and teamed up with an
art-making experience. Children will be invited to create a masterpiece that can be eaten - very Kristo and fun. 10:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. For children 3 and up.

Flower Power is a storytime that celebrates Spring with stories, music, a film and a flower-making craft. Don't miss this event on Wednesday, April 16, between 10:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. for flowering fun.

On Thursday of this week, Barney proudly presents Explore
Australia . Children will meet Cee Jay Robinson, a teacher, who was born and raised in Sydney Australia. She will share stories and activities from her native country. For children ages 5 and up . Program begins at 10:30 a.m.

Australian Artifacts on Display

Artifacts, animals, real kangaroo fur, and Australian red soil are in the display case at Barney for the month of April.

April has many Australia inspired programs and projects.

End of the School Year Stories and More Collections

Many teachers are taking good advantage of the wonderful and extensive story collections at the Barney. Finding a collection of books from fairy tales to the Spring Season is no trouble and stories made for great read-aloud presentations can be found for any grade level - from preschool to high school.

If you are a teacher interested in getting a collection from the library, all you have to do is call and put in your order. When you get the assistance from the staff, you will receive new books and old. These books have been specifically selected for your needs. Spring into spring with some great stories and read alouds.

Leading The Easter Parade

Participants in The Barney Library Pre-school Story Hour on Wednesday mornings from 10:30-11:15 a.m. have the opportunity to celebrate the rituals of life through the seasons and the holidays. This week, three, four and five year olds heard stories about ducks and chicks, did The Chicken Dance, watched the film Rosie's Walk and created their own basket with stickers and a chicken handle to hold jelly beans and chocolate eggs. Afterwards, they led The Easter Parade.

Boys Read For Fun

In a new After-School Reading Book Club at Barney some enterprizing and smart 3rd grade boys are spending their time reading two great books. They are reading, How to Be A perfect Person in Three Days and Weird Stories from the Lonesome Cafe.

These adventurous readers are underscoring their reading comprehension by drawing amazing self-portrait cartoons and designing yetti and/or space alien masks. Its all good fun at this afternoon activitiy, and this book club once again proves that being smart is also fun.

State Troubadour, Pierce Campbell, a big hit at Barney's St. Patrick's Day Celebration

On March 13, at 1:15 P.M. the Barney Library Held a St Patrick's Day Celebration. The fifty some member audience enjoyed the music and wit of State Troubadour, Pierce Campbell. After his well-received and much appreciated performance the audience enjoyed authentic Irish Soda Bread and fresh-brewed Irish Tea.

This event was a welcome happening on one of the last cold days of winter.
Friendships and the general spirits of the crowd were rekindled with this concert called, "The Wearin' Of The Green".

Look forward to next month's afternoon special. On April 8, 2008 , patrons are invited to attend the "Wonders Of the Land Down Under", This program features an armchair travel exploration of Australia, lead by Australian Native, Cee Jay Robinson.

Tot Time is not just for Mom, caregivers and children! Dads and Grandpas are always welcome to join the fun! The forty-five minute program held at The Barney Library, 71 Main Street, on Tuesday mornings from 9:30-10:15 a.m., is a joyful introduction to the library. Books, rhymes, music and movement, playtime and socialization are incorporated into each class held for children 0-3 years of age accompanied by an adult.

Whooooo Visited The Barney Library?

Wind Over Wings, founded by Wildlife Rehabilitator Hope Douglas, brought four owls to The Barney Library, much to the delight of sixty people! The audience had the opportunity to meet a Barred Owl, an Eastern Screech Owl, a Saw Whet Owl and a Great Horned Owl. The program, sponsored by The Friends of The Farmington Library, covered the owls' remarkable hearing, sight, and ability to fly silently. The secrets of spotting an owl in the wild were also shared. Needless to say, the owls stole the show, charming the participants with sounds of all kinds.
